I read a totally wonderful book the other day. It was the Automatic Millionaire. I got hooked on it at Books a Million and forked out the $14 to get it. I am sure I could have come home and found it cheaper somewhere else but I HAD TO HAVE IT. It was written in a down to earth tone and just had what I considered to be sound advice. Basically, these are the lessons:
(1) If you prioritize, you can work (save) for yourself at least an hour of your pay. Think about your spending habits.
(2) Pay yourself first. Up until 1943, everyone got their entire paycheck and paid taxes the following spring. But the government figured out we were not capable of paying them. So they worked out how to pay themselves first.
(3) Utilize your employer savings plans (401k, daycare, medical) to save on taxes.
(4) Don't rack up debt and cut down expenses.
(5) Pay your mortgage bi-weekly instead of monthly that way you pay an extra payment per year.
(6) Make everything automatic so you don't miss the money.
Now this book is so good that I read out loud 3 or 4 chapters to Jordan. He was even hooked. I am going to sit down and figure out how to start doing some of these things at least by the new year. My next debt to pay off is the car. I actually looked at the numbers to sell it. Would it make sense to sell it? Save ourselves nearly $500 per month. Would it be smart just to use the paid for car we have and rent a vehicle for vacation and long trips. We both have good credit , so I am sure if we found we needed a vehicle, we could go out and buy one without problems. The numbers actually saddened me. Our van isn't worth what we owe according to kelly blue book by about $3k. Ugggg.....how did that happen. Got a good price, pay our bills on time, killer interest rate. So I am gonna look at paying down that $3k and then considering a sell.
Will keep you updated as to our progress.
I didn't qualify for any surverys on cash crate. But, I went ahead and completed a couple of offers to get in my $1.00 per day goal. I like that I can click the (X) to ignore offers.
